Self-directed Language Learning with AI scoring and Generative AI feedback
Hong Kong, 10 Dec, 2023 — Fanling Kau Yan College recently hosted an innovative workshop that highlighted the transformative potential of AI in language learning. The event featured a keynote lecture by Professor Yu, an expert in AI and educational technology, who shared valuable insights on the latest advancements in Generative AI (GAI) feedback systems designed to enhance language acquisition. Two pioneering secondary schools in Hong Kong, Fanling Kau Yan College and ELCHK Lutheran Secondary School, recently participated in an innovative pilot program designed to explore the benefits of AI-enhanced feedback in language learning.
In this pilot program, students from both schools engaged in real-life scene description tasks, receiving constructive feedback from the AI-driven system aimed at improving language proficiency. At Fanling Kau Yan College, 148 students completed tasks, generating a total of 1,232 picture-sentence pairs. Among those receiving feedback, 82.2% found it beneficial, and 88.6% appreciated the suggestions provided.
Similarly, 123 students from ELCHK Lutheran Secondary School completed the picture-cued tasks, resulting in 2,914 unique picture-sentence pairs after duplicate entries were removed. Feedback from the AI system was well-received, with 75.34% of students expressing that the comments provided were helpful in enhancing their language skills.
These impressive results underscore the effectiveness of our AI language learning platform in engaging students and supporting measurable improvements in language proficiency. By providing targeted, insightful feedback, the program has empowered students to become more confident and capable in their language learning journey.
The successful outcomes from both schools set a strong precedent for educational institutions across Hong Kong to consider integrating AI-driven tools into their curricula. With continued support from the educational community, we are committed to expanding this AI initiative to help more students benefit from advanced language learning technologies. After the workshop, 32 secondary schools and 2 primary schools with an estimated total of around 5,000 students have showed interest in joining the pilot test. So far, 500 other primary and secondary school students from Hong Kong have participated in the test. More and more schools are interesting to participate in our project.
